INTRODUCTION TO INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: BEYOND THE BASICS

SPONSORED BY: OCTANE (Oldham County Technology Network) and Oldham County Community Education

WHAT: A quick look under the hood of computers, networks, and the internet. A nuts-and-bolts approach in a state of the art computer lab covering topics such as PC troubleshooting and repair, setting up networks, how the internet works, safe computing and security, telecommunications, and business applications. Taught by local technology professionals with real life experience. Tuition of $75 includes textbook, toolkit, and utility software on CD.

1. 9/6/05 - PC Troubleshooting & Repair: hardware basics, operating systems, purchasing & upgrading systems

2. 9/13/05 - Networking: connecting computers; Ethernet cables & wireless; hubs, switches & routers; file & print sharing;

3. 9/20/05 - Internet: connecting to the Internet; high speed access; DSL v. Cable; email; web searching; web hosting

4. 9/17/05 - Security: preventing viruses, spam, spyware; unauthorized access; phishing; hacking & firewalls

5. 10/4/05 - Servers: file & print servers; shared calendars & email; using Outlook; Microsoft, Linux

6. 10/11/05 - Business & Legal Issues: small office/home office; licensing & copyright issues
